Now That Everyone is Working From Home, Who Can We Trust?

In 2021, more than 42% of the US Labor Force worked full time from home

WFH Has Become The Norm In Less Than 24 Months

The change has been significant

  •  Pre-COVID Only 4.1% (5.7 million) employees worked from home
  • From 2019 to 2020 That number has nearly doubled (22% – 42%)
  • COVID’s peak 69% of employees were remote

Highest WFH industries remained constant

  • Professional, scientific, technical services (12%)
  • Information (10%)
  • Finance & Insurance (9%)
  • Real Estate, Rental, & Leasing (8%)

More than 54% of employees want to stay WFH post-COVID

The WFH Revolution Has Many People Excited

Employees have found that WFH greatly enhances their work

  • 87% say they have the right tech at home
  • 80% say they still meet project deadlines on time
  • 77% have adequate workspace
  • 68% believe they can do work without interruptions
  • 64% feel motivated to do their work

There are also clear benefits for employee wellbeing

  • 50% lower turnover rates
  • 57% increased job satisfaction
  • 18% total workforce reduction on the roads

WFH employers save thousands of dollars in overhead

  • $11,000 per employee for halftime remote work
  • $22,000 for full time
  • $700 billion in total national savings in a single year
  • $68 million saved by Sun Microsystems per year

And so do their employees

  • $2,000 to $7,000 Amount saved by employees in personal finance each year

Although the benefits remain high, more than 41% of employers doubt the work ethic of their employees

There Are Some Growing Pains In Change

Employers are having difficulty trusting their employees while WFH

  • 48% of employees believe levels of trust have changed since the pandemic
  • 85% of employers doubt their leadership pipelines
  • 69% of managers are uncomfortable communicating with employees

Because of this, micromanagement is on the rise

  • Excessive control or an over-attention to detail

1 in 5 employees believe that micromanagement is the most stressful aspect of working from home

Micromanagement While Working From Home Is A Huge Problem

Micromanagement effects both employers and employees

Employees

  • 71% believe their work is negatively impacted
  • 69% considered changing jobs due to micromanagement
  • 68% experienced lower morale

Employers

  • 50% drop in productivity
  • 39% higher employee turnover rate
  • 33% of annual salary must be spent to replace employees

“Team members need to feel trusted and valued, and micromanaging communicates the opposite. Founders who are prone to manage every detail of their businesses will ultimately kill themselves as well as lose the support of team members”

Martin Zwilling, Founder and CEO of Startup Professionals
